Damlataş Cave: Antalya’s Natural Underground Wonder
Antalya is a destination of stunning landscapes, rich history, and hidden gems. Among these is Damlataş Cave (Damlataş Mağarası), a natural marvel located in Alanya that attracts visitors with its unique beauty and healing properties.
Discovered accidentally in 1948 during the construction of Alanya’s harbor, Damlataş Cave has since become one of the region’s most popular attractions. The cave is believed to be around 15,000 years old. Its name, “Damlataş,” translates to “dripping stone.” This is a fitting description of its intricate stalactites and stalagmites. These formations were formed by dripping water over millennia.
The cave’s interior is a visual feast, with spectacular formations of stalactites and stalagmites illuminated by soft lighting. The temperature inside remains a constant 22°C (71°F) year-round. Additionally, there are high humidity levels of around 95%. The air is rich in carbon dioxide and contains micro-particles. These are believed to be therapeutic.
Damlataş Cave is renowned for its health benefits. It is particularly beneficial for individuals with respiratory issues such as asthma. The cave’s microclimate, rich in natural minerals, is said to have a soothing effect on the lungs. Visitors often come to the cave not only to admire its beauty but also to spend time breathing its air as part of natural therapy.
